Using the top of one of our old workshop tables as a frame, Kerwin & Rod did the preliminary work on the marquee, which Kerwin then finished in his workshop. This morning we moved the Citizens Band sign nearer to the Annex door, put the marquee near the main steps, facing King Street, and put up the movable “Enter Here” sign by the annex door for tonight’s film. Kerwin also installed a bracket by the auditorium door, so the “Enter Here” sign can be put there for concerts, etc. The enter here sign was made and donated to the Band Hall by Ian Black who very kindly offered to do this for us as soon as he heard of this project. Kerwin will be putting up a double-headed spotlight on the corner of the Band Hall, above the main stairs, to help light the marquee.
These pins secured two sections of sill timber together in a lap joint. We still don’t have a construction date of the annex. If anyone can help with the dating please let us know. This deteriorated timber was rescued from the repair debris during the replacement procedure for rotting sill sections where the annex and main hall join.

The board approved an allocation of funds in the capital account for more building repairs to keep it in a state of readiness for the capital renovation, the cultural and well being centre. Up to $4000 was earmarked to repair the sills in the corner of the annex and the main hall and by the door to the annex. The following pictures indicate the level of decay found (not nearly as bad as we feared) and the work done as of Dec 8, 09.

Over the last century water has intruded into the sill structure around the door opening to the annex. Although it looks bad the rot did not extend into the back side of the 6×8

Two days into it and the sill is replaced. Next the restoration of the trim complete with proper flashing to ensure this doesn’t happen again for another one hundred years.

Aviva Update

Thanks so much to all the great supporters that went the extra mile to help us get into the top twenty of our round. Unfortunately we needed to be in the top twenty of all three rounds of voting and we just didn’t have the time ( we only had nine days) to get the numbers up. The momentum everyone helped to build was tremendous and if we’d the same time frame as others I feel we would have been there for sure.

Take a look at some of the wonderful comments:

R Wheaton: Keep up the good work everyone!!!

Dawn: Everyone ….. lets give them a hand!!! Awesome!!

November 24, 2009 @ 8:29 AM EST

Helen: In the two-and-a-half years since I moved to Parrsboro, I’ve been to at least 60 events & activities at the Band Hall. Volunteering with the Parrsboro Band Association has made me part of this community. I haven’t felt “from away” for a long time now.

November 24, 2009 @ 8:51 AM EST

Phil Hillier: A great cause, well done ! Supporting the facility for performance arts and community events in the context of this lovely historic building is something everyone in the community, and beyond should embrace. Don’t hesitate; vote now, and spread the word !.

November 24, 2009 @ 10:39 AM EST

peterd: Great cause and very historic enterprise that can benefit so many

November 24, 2009 @ 12:57 PM EST

Anna Marie: Great cause, the band hall is a part of our community!!!!!

November 25, 2009 @ 6:23 AM EST

mf: It’s great to get your support and read your comments. The next twenty places will be the hardest. Spread the word. We’ve done really well. The support is energizing.

November 25, 2009 @ 7:56 AM EST

muggins48: My family has a long history in Parrsboro and I would love to see the hall saved, I remember as a child running to the post office to beat my sister to get the mail there. I would love to see pins or buttons made with the save the hall and have them for sale as fund raisers , I would certainly buy one or more and wear them proudly. Maggie Phinney

November 25, 2009 @ 12:36 PM EST

PCBA: Four days to go and going strong. Keep up the good work and remind everyone to not forget us. Also don’t forget to check out our facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Parrsboro-Citizens-Band/141212931635 For muggins48, Buttons are available, featuring the logo above. Give David a call at 254 3674 and he will make sure one is available for you. The cost? Four more votes in the next four days.

November 25, 2009 @ 2:26 PM EST

valerie: Those walls hold decades of beauty. It has all the great stuff that makes a town tick. And with a bit of energy it could hold much more. I can’t wait to get back to Parrsboro and be a part of it all!

November 25, 2009 @ 8:33 PM EST

Riles: I learned to play trumpet at the Band Hall, joined the PCB, took part in all night rockathons and more in that place. A lot of good memories- that should be shared with generations to come. I think Bernie would approve of the efforts being put forth here!!!

November 25, 2009 @ 9:55 PM EST

Col. Bogey: Not unlike you Riley — I learned a lot of things in that Band Hall (and most of them had something to do with music)! Honestly, many of my formative years were spent there — much of the time spent learning to play the Baritone Horn and the rest of the time learning how to be part of a team and, more importantly, how to be a decent human being. Thanks Bernie I am confident that if we band together (pardon the pun) we will be able to keep the Hall open and in doing so ensure that future generations get the same opportunities to learn about themselves and realize their potential.

November 25, 2009 @ 11:13 PM EST

lester.wheat: Alright voters!!!!!! I know we can do this…Let’s make Bernie proud!!!!!

November 26, 2009 @ 5:36 AM EST

mahfia: Yup – lots of memories at the band hall – my elem. & high school years would not have been the same without it! I learned to play clarinet and saxophone there… the band hall doubled as a multi-purpose space for us the year our gym was close due to vandalism – we held dances and assemblies there! I remember going to Christmas Tea & Sales and preforming and attending concerts. Not to mention it is a building with loads of history and lot of future potential! We can do this Amherst got TSN and helped save the YMCA – Parrsboro can get Aviva to ” Save the Hall”

November 26, 2009 @ 6:49 AM EST

Reg Y: Lester , you read my mind. Bernie and Horace and many more would be proud of the efforts being taken .The hall has touched many of our lives, and there are a lot of memories in those walls. ” Get On Down” and vote friends.

November 26, 2009 @ 7:04 AM EST

Riles: I will shave my head and post a pic on Facebook if there are 1370 more votes accumulated in the next 3 days on behalf of the Parrsboro Band Hall!!

November 26, 2009 @ 7:10 AM EST

Michael F: It’s so wonderful to read these comments. It sure helps to know that we’re on the right road. We can do this and we will do this. It’s too important. If you want to make it happen in other ways get in touch. It’s a real community project and there’s a lot to do. email – chair@thehall.ca or just go to our website and connect with anyone in the organization. Thanks – keep voting- spread the word.

November 26, 2009 @ 8:25 AM EST

dongeddes: I was a member of the PCB when the hall was upstairs at the old firehall behind the drugstore and that wasn’t yesterday !!! lol. Brings back a lot of good times.

November 26, 2009 @ 8:51 AM EST

Paul Cram: The Parrsboro Citizen’s Band Hall is an artifact and a symbol of the spirit of community led by the Parrsboro Cirizen’s Band, the longest running community band in Canada still playing (estb.1890?) , This longevity is an amazing thread that should not be broken, because it is community music making that will save us in the end. The PCB’s survival and the expansion of its mandate to include a cultural centre relies on a workable facility. Vote!!

November 26, 2009 @ 10:02 AM EST

Jay: Getting closer!

November 26, 2009 @ 10:41 AM EST

DR Rec: Yes….lets do this for Bernie….I was taught the baratone, percussion, trombone, and many MANY life lessons. I think the band hall has many great memories for so many people. My grand mother and grand father always worked the Parrsboro Citizens Band day. papa Barbequed, nanny made TONS of potato salad and served the crowds. Of course all of their 7 children and myself were all active members in this fantastic group. Lets get busy…spread the word to EVERYONE ….vote Vote VOTE!!!!!

November 26, 2009 @ 12:12 PM EST

pcb: First known reference to the band… 1877. Current building built…. 1885. Band has been in residence here since early 1970’s. A ton of memories, a mile of tradition and incredible support from our community. This is so wonderful to see!!! Thank you all and keep it up. Every vote brings us one step closer.

November 26, 2009 @ 12:37 PM EST

thehall: Great response so far and some wonderful memories here in the comments. Would love to see them left at www.thehall.ca or https://sites.google.com/site/pcbmusicianssite/ so we can continue to flesh out the marvellous history of this facility which is so full of memories. and ghosts?

November 26, 2009 @ 12:50 PM EST

MaryMaple: A wonderful community project and what amazing support we have seen this past week Thanks everyone, keep it coming!

November 26, 2009 @ 9:33 PM EST

Patricia: Way to go!!. Make dad proud that we are trying and will succeed to keep the hall open and the band that he was proud to be a director of continue.

November 27, 2009 @ 5:24 AM EST

dreyfess: It only takes a second of your time….KEEP voting!!!!!

November 27, 2009 @ 8:28 AM EST

Beaconview: I have more than one soft spot for Parrsboro. Go for it.

November 27, 2009 @ 8:41 AM EST

danjomac: This historic landmark of a building must be saved and restored. As a boy growing up in Parrsboro in the 50’s and 60’s this was thee community center at the time. It was where we met and drilled for Sea Cadets. It was where the townspeople gathered to watch Eastern Canada’s version of the WWF – World Wrestling Federation. It is a place where you could go and watch country & western musical groups perform and watch stage productions of Christmas pageants. Parrsboro desparately needs this building as a truly dedicated central community center and it is my hope that the Save the Hall organization group are successful being awarded much needed funding in this unique promotion campaign.

November 27, 2009 @ 9:04 AM EST

Parrsboro-21: Great job everyone. Nice to see the community spirit continue!

November 27, 2009 @ 9:29 AM EST

Margo: We’re almost to 1500! Way to go!

November 29, 2009 @ 8:21 AM EST

Patricia: Way to go!!! We are going to make it, I feel we can!!! Vote Vote Vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a testiment of the dedication of everyone that has supported this idea since Nov 20. It shows The Hall will rise up to be a worldclass Facility with all of us extending a hand. Your votes today will show the Band Association they have the support they need to proceed. Dad is looking down on us today and saying “By the right quick march” ahead with this idea.

November 29, 2009 @ 8:54 AM EST

almamcguire: look at the progress in just one day!!!!!!!! What a great project for Parrsboro and the surrounding area!! Wouldn’t Bernie be proud

maddiej: I am Bernie’s grandaughter from out west. I have a 2 year old daughter and she loves to dance when she hears music. Bring on the votes to keep grampies band alive and maddie promises to dance for the band the next time we are home .

November 29, 2009 @ 11:20 AM EST

p burke: Dad would be proud to see that the hall is alive and getting better. Extra funds are always necessary

November 29, 2009 @ 11:21 AM EST

kburke: Go go go! We can do it!

November 29, 2009 @ 11:23 AM EST

Rob: I taught the Parrsboro Schools band program in that hall for 2 years – a great facility!!

November 29, 2009 @ 11:28 AM EST

blind.sight: Closing the hall is closing a chapter in history. This hall has so many years ahead of it! Let’s keep it open!

November 29, 2009 @ 11:29 AM EST

Jean&Sharon: Good luck everyone! Hopefully your hard work will keep the centre open to be enjoyed for years to come.

November 29, 2009 @ 11:34 AM EST

Mississauga: I spent a lot of my youth at the Hall. Everything from band, dances, weddings, special meetings, youth clubs etc. Parrsboro needs the hall to remain alive and in good working order for years to come

November 29, 2009 @ 11:34 AM EST

Debbie: I’ve attended events at this hall. It is a piece of history that has made and is a part of Parrsboro, N.S. It holds many stories that should be told to those who live and visit the town. It has architectural importance. Keep this piece of history alive and well!

November 29, 2009 @ 11:44 AM EST

kristawellsc: I’ll match Riles (see message above) about shaving his head. If we make it into the top 20 I’ll shave mine too! It will be a symbolic representation of how we’ve all been pulling our hair out trying to find ways to make this dream happen. The Hall, renovated and revitalized will bring life to the community and the community to life!!

November 29, 2009 @ 11:50 AM EST

bandwagon: As a person growing up I was involved with the band. Bernie taught me alot about life and helped me be who I am today. And of what fun I had driving the bandwagon for our trips to parades and concerts. Keep on voting!!! Tell all your friends and even your enemies we need their support to make this happen.

November 29, 2009 @ 12:07 PM EST

Margo: Wow, we are really getting somewhere! Let’s keep voting!

November 29, 2009 @ 12:18 PM EST

toskeric: Sounds like a great idea. I’m not from there but it’s always a shame to see a place of music to wither away.

November 29, 2009 @ 1:35 PM EST

Gleneida: Great to see so much support and so many votes in a short time…. Way to go!

November 29, 2009 @ 2:33 PM EST

diva: Brenda Wheaton Thanks so much for the unbelievable support in the last few days.Just think what we could have done if we had started in October like the other worthy projects in this competition. This will be such a wonderful addition to Parrsboro and area. Just think of the extra jobs it will bring to a small town like Parrsboro with a center that is open 12 months of the year. The restaurants, B & B’s, and motel will have to hire extra staff instead of closing for the winter!! We are in 19th place and we need to stay there. Anyone that can work a phone please do so. A couple of hundred more votes will help us to stay where we are!! Many,Many Thanks! Brenda Burke Wheaton

November 29, 2009 @ 4:45 PM EST

Riles: Amazed at the increased support even over the course of the last week!! The hall is such an integrated part of Parrsboro’s history, any effort to help in its restoration is a worthy attempt. This project is certainly “buzzworthy” – and would no doubt result in at least a band concert or two!!!

November 29, 2009 @ 5:12 PM EST

Langstroth: Go Gettum Friends! Bill

November 29, 2009 @ 6:18 PM EST

geo: was amazed at the stunning vistas and sheer beauty of the parrsboro area and hope to enjoy the bandhall again ! the people are wonderful and the concerts and workshops we gave there this summer were very well attengeg and the response was very positive !

November 29, 2009 @ 6:26 PM EST

Riles: Well everyone, we did an excellent job at showing support- now the rest lies with the panel of judges. Almost 2000 votes! What a great effort! If nothing else, we raised further awareness for the Band Hall and gave opportunity for everyone to share their appreciation for one of Parrsboro’s testaments to community!!

November 29, 2009 @ 11:47 PM EST

dgustafson: Good job everyone! I am very proud! Amazing last few days!
