St Patrick’s Day at The Hall

The little fellow below look familiar? Although all of Houligans Ruff will not be available, we would still like to continue the Parrsboro St Patrick’s Day Party on Saturday March 17th. Jigg’s Dinner at the United Church, two hours of rollicking Irish-ish entertainment at The Hall and then down to Bare Bones to finish the night off in the finest of Irish traditions! What we would like is for anyone who can play a tin whistle, dance a jig, recount a favourite Irish tale, or sing sing and sing some more to join us at The Hall for an Irish Kitchen Party! We can’t promise the high production values, or the incredibly seamless presentation of Houligan’s Ruff, just a great time for all at The Hall. Anyone willing to pitch in, wear green and generally have a good time just let Frank or David know and we’ll see what we can do. And watch here or on Facebook for more details!

A Great Christmas Concert

The Annual Citizens’ Band Concert on Monday 19 December was played before the largest audience for a concert in recent memory. Over 100 residents of the town and surrounding area gathered at The Hall to celebrate Christmas in music.

The concert opened with the revitalized Parrsboro Junior Band playing, including two pieces they had seen only two weeks prior to the concert.

This was also the first time the new lighting system had been used in a ‘performance’ setting and Alex Odlin did an great job as operator, ensuring that musicians, speakers and soloists were highlighted.

For their final number they were joined by the Parrsboro Citizens’ Band for a combined band performance of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and it was amazing to hear how the sound filled The Hall. The Bernie Burke Auditorium certainly rocked!

The Citizens’ Band then stayed and played for a very warm and appreciative audience. The band was followed by a violin solo by Hailey Harrison accompanied by Rob Bentley on acoustic guitar. Timi Levy closed off the first half of the evening with two solos, including a hauntingly beautiful “O Holy Night”, she was also accompanied by Rob Bentley.

At the intermission several draws were made for door prizes, with Nancy Curleigh assisted by two members of the Junior Band conducting the draws. The final draw was for the “Little Bit of Everything” basket, tickets for which had been on sale for a couple of months. Fittingly, the basket was won by Tommy Strutz, who has spent numerous hours volunteering at The Hall, and no, no ‘fix’ was in.

The second half of the evening was opened by David Towns with a vocal rendition of “The Christmas Song” accompanied by the extremely talented Jeannie Trider. The concert concluded with a series of seasonal, up-tempo arrangements performed by the Elastic Big Band.

The Board would like to thank all who have been so involved in the music programme at The Hall and those who worked so hard behind the scenes, again, to provide refreshments at the break. The Board hopes everyone has a very Happy Christmas and a joyful and prosperous New Year.

Sackville Community Band

The Sackville (NS) Community Band is comprised of 55 members varying in ages and musical experience who were brought together for their love of music. They are from many walks of life – professional musicians, retired musicians, local music teachers, students and members from the community. They come well recommended and it will be a treat for us to see people in “tuxes”.

Instrumental Improvisation Intensive

Update July 17

As of today the intensive- an excellent descriptive- is going extremely well. The motivators of the session are seasoned professionals who bring an incredible wealth of knowledge to the world of painting with music. Paul Cram, saxophonist, is the magician who put all the people together. Pierre Tanguay, master percussionist brings charm, grace and a wonderful sense of playfulness. Deanne LaBrosse, sampler and electronic guru opens the door to a world of potential through her theatric innovations and Lyle Ellis, bassist and stalker of interplanetary wavelengths unleashes a new way of seeing/hearing the way we see/play music. A fabulous experience thus far, floundering through revelation.
