The Band Association has been notified by Service Nova Scotia & Municipal Relations that it has been granted funds of $5700, or 66% of the project costs, to proceed with the accessible washroom and ramp for The Hall. This is huge news for the Association. This means that The Access for All at The Hall project, which we have tried now twice to fund through participation in the Aviva competition, will be able to proceed.

Construction will begin this coming September and should be completed in time for the annual Oktoberfest! Paul Gilbert renovations will be doing the construction and a contract is being drawn up as we speak. The accessibility project was the first major construction goal of our strategic plan and will enable the Association to move forward toward next year’s goals with renewed hope and energy.
(see the full strategic plan on our website www.thehall.ca)

The newest members to join the team around the board table are Don Allsion, a native son recently returned and Dr. David Howe, long standing band member.

Beside his youthful vigor done bring a wealthy background in performing art and cultural entrepreneurship to the board.

Kids of all ages and of all generations should enjoy great moments in the ‘Auditorium’, aka ‘The Band Hall’. First grade graduation, first live theatre, first dance, first political speeches, the Grand Ole Opry tour, Sea Cadets; all these precious memories occurred in this building. May my input through the Board of Directors help this institution thrive and serve for many years to come.

Dr Howe has served his community well for many years as general practitioner in Parrsboro. During those years he committed to also play the first flute with the Citizens’ Band and bari sax with the Elastic Big Band. He now takes on the role of director representing the band on the Board of Directors.

My memories are mostly of one person. Bernie Burke. In my time in the band from around 1974-78, it was Bernie. When I look back as an adult today, growing up in the greatest little town in Canada, we had a great marching band and stage band. From Tyne Valley to The Natal Day Parade, and finally two trips to New Brunswick. One to the Maritime Music Festival and to St. Andrews By The Sea and the day it rained all day for the “MUSICAL RIDE”.

Bernie was always there for the kids of Parrsboro who wanted to be in the band and had some sort of talent. He did more for the youth in the town of Parrsboro than anyone past, present, or furture. And I have been truly blessed to have known Bernie Burke.

Keep up the good work and I am ready to help out again some weekend you are having a work party. PS, I think that my sister had a good time in the band as well with Kendra Muir , Kathy Matheson, Susan Boyd and others much older than me !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello members, supporters and friends of the hall.

It is certainly time, that on behalf of the Board of Directors and the volunteers surrounding this wonderful project, I bring you up to date with the progress we’ve made. Firstly though let me tell you how much we appreciate your support and willingness to become involved in the evolution of the Parrsboro Citizens’ Band Hall from its current forlorn state to what we all hope will become another jewel in the crown of Parrsboro, the Community Culture and Wellness Centre.

Over the last few months we have been busy with our membership campaign and the work of stabilizing the building. Out of consensus we have put together a concept for the future of the hall that we trust will be as exciting to you as it is to us. At this point we are ready to proceed with funding to put our design, usage and business plan into real terms.

This is the direction. When the dust settles we will have converted the hall into a modern performance facility, a fitness and wellness centre and place for the community to find education, participation, demonstration and enjoyment in cultural and wellness activities.

The main auditorium will feature a performance stage with state of the art lighting, sound and acoustic qualities. The previous kitchen will be divided into two levels to house washrooms, kitchen, dressing room, office and workshop space for anything from Tai Chi to book binding.

The basement level will house the Fitness and Wellness Centre which will be outfitted with the modern equipment designed to help us all maintain or attain a healthy level of fitness and will be run to service the entire community including school programs and programs aimed at senior citizens. We are hopeful that this will become an outreach program and facility of the YMCA.

For those of you who hold a special place and concern in their heart for the Citizens Band please feel secure in knowing that as long as we have a band they will have a home.

All of this will come wrapped in a completely refurbished building that will have been returned to its historic profile complete with bell tower! In preserving this building to reflect its past we would like it to symbolize the respect and reverence for the people, the skills and the perseverance that has made Parrsboro and its environs such a special place for us all to live.

We hope, by mid July, to have concept designs and a financial plan in place to share with you. It is our intention to have this dream become a reality in the not too distant future.

We have a great board of directors and are now putting together action committees to support our goals. If you have time and energy please feel free to contact any board member to see how you can lend a hand.

Thanks again for all you support

Michael Fuller
Chair – Board of Directors
