Although all of Houligans Ruff will not be available, we would still like to continue the Parrsboro St Patrick’s Day Party on Saturday March 17th. Jigg’s Dinner at the United Church, two hours of rollicking Irish-ish entertainment at The Hall and then down to Bare Bones to finish the night off in the finest of Irish traditions! What we would like is for anyone who can play a tin whistle, dance a jig, recount a favourite Irish tale, or sing sing and sing some more to join us at The Hall for an Irish Kitchen Party! We can’t promise the high production values, or the incredibly seamless presentation of Houligan’s Ruff, just a great time for all at The Hall. Anyone willing to pitch in, wear green and generally have a good time just let Frank or David know and we’ll see what we can do. And watch here or on Facebook for more details!

This moves the hall along it’s planned path toward becoming a green facility and helps the volunteer staff more easily do it’s job. The sorters have a garbage section, refundables section and paper section. The board of directors is very appreciative to RRFB for assisting in the purchase of above. Thanks also to Councillor Lisa Ward who made “The Hall” aware that there is a program available.

The Resource Recovery Fund Board (RRFB) was established in 1996 as a not-for-profit organization, operating at “arms-length” from government. It administers many important waste diversion programs such as the province’s bottle, tire and paint recycling programs.

Monday evening was the first public exhibition of the new lighting system at The Hall. The system was acquired almost totally through the efforts of Michael Fuller who, through his extensive contacts in the theatre community was able to locate some incredible bargains on equipment purchases and through a fund raising campaign with the members and friends of The Hall. Then with the assistance of Rob Bentley and Kerwin Davison, he spent hours rigging the gear into place. If that were not enough Michael and Rob then conducted two workshops for people interested in the technical and operational aspects of both the lighting and the new sound system. The workshops were very successful resulting in one student actually running both the lights and sound at Monday’s concert. Alex Odlin did a great job from the control booth (yet another new addition to The Hall this year)

Within hours of its completion, the ramp was put to good use for the Christmas concert, permitting three residents of Parrsboro who might otherwise not have been able, to attend the concert. We will be adding two reserved parking spaces in the driveway beside the ramp in the near future, which will permit at least two vehicles for those with disabilities to park right beside the ramp on occasions when events are being held at The Hall. Otherwise, they will be still be available for general parking.

The concert opened with the revitalized Parrsboro Junior Band playing, including two pieces they had seen only two weeks prior to the concert.

This was also the first time the new lighting system had been used in a ‘performance’ setting and Alex Odlin did an great job as operator, ensuring that musicians, speakers and soloists were highlighted.

For their final number they were joined by the Parrsboro Citizens’ Band for a combined band performance of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and it was amazing to hear how the sound filled The Hall. The Bernie Burke Auditorium certainly rocked!

The Citizens’ Band then stayed and played for a very warm and appreciative audience. The band was followed by a violin solo by Hailey Harrison accompanied by Rob Bentley on acoustic guitar. Timi Levy closed off the first half of the evening with two solos, including a hauntingly beautiful “O Holy Night”, she was also accompanied by Rob Bentley.

At the intermission several draws were made for door prizes, with Nancy Curleigh assisted by two members of the Junior Band conducting the draws. The final draw was for the “Little Bit of Everything” basket, tickets for which had been on sale for a couple of months. Fittingly, the basket was won by Tommy Strutz, who has spent numerous hours volunteering at The Hall, and no, no ‘fix’ was in.

The second half of the evening was opened by David Towns with a vocal rendition of “The Christmas Song” accompanied by the extremely talented Jeannie Trider. The concert concluded with a series of seasonal, up-tempo arrangements performed by the Elastic Big Band.

The Board would like to thank all who have been so involved in the music programme at The Hall and those who worked so hard behind the scenes, again, to provide refreshments at the break. The Board hopes everyone has a very Happy Christmas and a joyful and prosperous New Year.

The Band Association has been notified by Service Nova Scotia & Municipal Relations that it has been granted funds of $5700, or 66% of the project costs, to proceed with the accessible washroom and ramp for The Hall. This is huge news for the Association. This means that The Access for All at The Hall project, which we have tried now twice to fund through participation in the Aviva competition, will be able to proceed.

Construction will begin this coming September and should be completed in time for the annual Oktoberfest! Paul Gilbert renovations will be doing the construction and a contract is being drawn up as we speak. The accessibility project was the first major construction goal of our strategic plan and will enable the Association to move forward toward next year’s goals with renewed hope and energy.
(see the full strategic plan on our website www.thehall.ca)
